The piece “Casa da Mariquinhas” is inspired by the colorful tiled houses of Portugal and by Alfredo Marceneiro and Silva Tavares’s Fado ballad.
It portrays the bohemian and diverse mixture of architectural styles and details of the historic quartiers, imbedded of fado and old traditions.
There has been a lively discussion on whether these little houses are located in Porto or Lisbon, but both cities were at the heart of my inspiration.
“Casa da Mariquinhas” is totally filled with embroidery stitches and is a fine combination of several of my favorite techniques: needle painting with 1 thread of cotton thread, laced lattice stitches, stump work and the details of the Portuguese traditional tiles are stitched with fine sewing thread.
This piece was started in 2020 and finished in 2021.
